iPhone remains the UK’s most popular smartphone

Eazi-Apps Support • Apr 05, 2014

Apple has remained the biggest seller of smartphones in the UK’s smartphone market. Figures have shown that from December 2013 until February 2014, Apple’s iPhone accounted for 32% of all smartphones bought in the UK.

Apple’s dominance in the UK’s smartphone market and Apple’s increase in sales over recent years could be attributed to the fact that here in the UK, customers can currently get good deals from mobile network operators for iPhone 5s, iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 range has remained the most popular and is likely to be the reason for Apple’s good sales.

Another reason for this is that Apple have recently released more iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s handsets at a significantly lower price in a bid to shift the stocks they have of the device in the UK. Apple is working towards making devices with the 30 pin adaptors obsolete and replacing them with the new ‘lightning point’ connector, therefore shifting what is left of the iPhone 4 range is key to achieving this.

Apple’s success in the UK has been mostly at the expense of its nearest rival Samsung, who are the second biggest seller of smartphones, with 30% of the UK’s smartphone market. Although Samsung are only 2% behind Apple in the level of sales in the UK, they have actually seen their UK sales drop by around 7% from December 2013 to February 2014, compared to the previous three months. However, this could change again in the next three month period, with many predicting that Samsung will become the biggest seller after it releases its new Galaxy S5 in April.

Although Apple have remained the biggest single seller, Android has remained the most dominant operating system on devices in the UK. In the same December 2013 to February 2014 period the number of smartphones using Android’s operating system was at 54%, which was a fall of around 5% compared to the previous three month period.
Apple is due to release its new iPhone 6 later this year and Samsung its new Galaxy S5 this spring, proving that the battle of the smartphone market here in the UK is showing no signs of slowing down!
