Your regular dose of app design inspiration

Planning an app design for 2021? If you’re keen to launch your new business app and need a little inspiration, our regular round ups are here to help. We’ve gathered together all of the most notable stories from the last few weeks here to ensure you’re fully informed as you begin the process of launching your own small business app.

Amazon gets it wrong – but quickly puts it right

Showing that even the world’s biggest brands are not immune from making a misstep when it comes to their branding, Amazon has been forced to change the logo associated with its shopping app after some users complained that the blue sticky tape design was too reminiscent of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s moustache.

The marketplace changed its new app logo to a folded up piece of tape after becoming aware of feedback. It said, “We designed the new icon to spark anticipation, excitement, and joy when customers start their shopping journey on their phone, just as they do when they see our boxes on their doorstep.” The move to quickly alter the new app logo was welcomed by branding experts, who said the swift action showed Amazon listened to its customers and was receptive to feedback – something that stands any new app owner in good stead.

Dating app hits $13bn market value

The dating app Bumble has hit a staggering $13bn market value after listing shares in the company, making its female founder a self-made billionaire at the age of just 31.

The app was created out of founder Whitney Wolfe Herd’s frustrating with existing dating apps. Recognising a gap in the market, she created Bumble with the intention of giving women a platform to make the first move. The app is currently used in more than 150 countries nationwide and has revealed plans to expand into areas outside of dating, with suggestions that it will focus on business networking next.

GameOn comes to App Store

With gaming soaring during the pandemic, Amazon’s GameOn app has picked the perfect time to launch for the App Store. Now, iPhone and iPad users will be able to use the app, which makes it possible to record gameplay. The app can be used with more than 1000 mobile games and allows users to record their screen to share their gameplay with others or via social media.
