BlackBerry set to be leap frogged by Windows Phone in the UK

Eazi-Apps Support • August 27, 2014

With the top two positions in the mobile operating system seemingly sealed by Apple (iOS) and Google (Android), the focus has now shifted to the third and fourth positions held currently by BlackBerry and Windows respectively.

As both BlackBerry and Windows try to build an eco-system similar to the success of Apple and Google, interesting research released in the UK shows how Windows is set to become the third biggest player in the market place – signaling more troubled times ahead for BlackBerry. For a number of years BlackBerry has seen its market share fall around the world as it tried to re-invent itself from the notion of being the phone of choice to business customers to reaching out to all types of consumers. Indeed the success of Apple and Google has shown the blueprint for how a phone and operating system can satisfy user requirements from a business and personal perspective in recent times.

In the UK, it has been widely predicted that the Windows Phone will overtake BlackBerry into the number three position within the smartphone user base. With eMarketer predicting that by the end of 2014 only 2.4 million customers in the UK will have a BlackBerry phone and down to 1.4 million customers by 2015, the future for BlackBerry remains uncertain.

On the other hand, Windows is set to increase in popularity and demand with any analysts predicting a 9% market share by the end of 2015. Although not posing a serious threat to the big two at the moment, Windows is set to cement its place within the mobile industry and within a few years could represent a credible alternative to Apple and Google’s dominance.

As more and more of the UK population embrace mobile technology, eMarketer estimates that by the end of 2014, 36.4 million people in the UK will own and use a smartphone at least monthly this year – a 10% rise over usage levels in 2013. With this being the case, there has never been a better time for technology savvy businesses from all industries to develop a mobile strategy to future proof their business.
