Mobile commerce trends for 2021

How to monetise your business app

If the last two Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events have taught us anything, it’s that mobile users are increasingly happy to spend money via their mobile devices. eMarketer statistics show that around half of consumers now use their mobile devices to shop, making this a potentially lucrative aspect of your new business app. Here are a few things to know about mobile commerce trends as we head into the New Year.

1. It’s growing and growing

We have already mentioned that consumers are gradually shifting towards feeling comfortable buying from their mobile but, figures suggest that in 2021, mobile commerce will actually outstrip other forms of purchasing. In fact, it’s expected that mobile (or m-commerce) will account for 73% of all global ecommerce next year.

2. And it’s taking place on apps

Mobile apps are, unsurprisingly, a key gateway to mobile orders for consumers. Last year, over half of consumers in the US were said to have turned to an app to find product information, something that looks set to increase further over the next 12 months. With consumers now well-versed in using apps to aid in their buying process, there is a key opportunity to monetize your own business app by tapping into that user behaviour.

3. Average order values will increase

If you’re feeling a little daunted by the prospect of incorporating an m-commerce function into your app, there are plenty of compelling reasons to take the plunge. One of the best is the fact that average order values are greater in app than on the mobile web with the total value increasing steadily year-on-year. If that trend continues, you could find that your app is actually a greater source of revenue than your traditional website over time.

4. One-click ordering will reduce shopping cart abandonment

Conversion rate optimisation is a key consideration for any ecommerce retailer. Adding one-click ordering functionality looks to be on its way to greater popularity in 2021, because it is shown to significantly reduce cart abandonment rates and increase conversions from app users. One tap to buy is also perfect for the smaller screens of mobile devices. By making the task of checking out that much easier, it improves the user experience, removes frustration and therefore makes it more likely that shoppers will return for future purchases.
