Yes, it really has been 10 years! 10 years since the indie fan favourite mobile iOS game Plants vs Zombies developed by George fan was released. The weird and wacky off the wall mobile game which pitches a garden full of tactically defensive plant life against a horde of attacking zombies has been gracing mobile screens for a decade now.
The initial game, which has now accumulated a number of spin offs and sequels, was eventually bought by gaming giant Electronic Arts for a tasty sum of $750million. No small fee and a testament to the foresight EA had into the huge potential future of mobile gaming which has only continued to grow and an incredible rate as devices have technically improved and online streaming and downloads have been boosted with the arrival of 4G and soon 5G networks.
The game falls into similar brackets as the huge Angry Birds craze which has since itself spawned multiple sequels and has even had a movie dedicated to it. Though perhaps the top player in mobile gaming monster titles still resides with Nintendo’s overnight international cult augmented reality and GPS game, Pokemon GO.
To put things into perspective, a recent Global Games Market Report claims that at the end of 2018, more than 2.3 billion enthusiasts spent an estimated $137 billion on games. This will result in an unprecedented increase of $16.2 billion from the year previous, or 13.3%. Innovative technologies, such as Augmented & Virtual Reality or Blockchain are striving to cover the whole digital market, especially the mobile gaming sector.
If that wasn’t enough, mobile gaming now accounts for over 50% of the total consumer gaming spend worldwide. An almost unbelievable statistic. The mobile gaming category is only genuinely 10-11 years old at best, coinciding with the launch of the Plants vs Zombies sensation. The industry is predicated to be worth $100 billion by the end of 2021. Gaming apps account for 21% of all apps downloaded and used on iOS devices to date.
So let’s raise a glass to one of the original and best mobile games that was there right at the start of the boom and has since evolved to being a cross platform game which even has major Electronic Arts console spin offs which are still being modified and built on even today.
