4 Things Mobile App Developers Should Know About the New App Store

Eazi-Apps Support • October 6, 2017

It’s been a busy period for Apple of late – along with the announcements of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8Plus and iPhone X launches and new iOS 11 software , the tech giant has also redesigned the App Store.

As a mobile app development business, this is potentially one of the biggest news stories of the year for you. With $21.5 billion in revenue generated from the App Store this year alone, there’s lots that developers can and should be doing to take advantage of the Store’s new features and new look.

Here are four things that you should know…

1 You need great graphics

While the basics of optimization focus on keywords and ensuring your content is search engine optimised, great graphics are critical to visibility in the newly designed App Store. Strong imagery can help an app to stand out, which in turn generates better click throughs from users – a component of better rankings.

2 You can reply to reviews

Research suggests that around eight out of ten people trust an online review as much as they would a personal recommendation from a friend or colleague. As part of the App Store redesign, Apple has added a new functionality which allows app developers to reply to user reviews of their products. Use this new option wisely and don’t jump in feet first without having a basic strategy for dealing with any negative reviews. Be timely with responses, acknowledge reviews and take heed of any criticisms – these are chances to improve your app, if the comment is valid.

3 Videos are important too

It’s not just images and text that matter in the new App Store. Each app can now post a preview video which will autoplay whenever a user arrives on the app’s landing page. Creating great video takes time, practise and expertise to nail. Aim for informative, engaging videos that highlight the best features of the app and what makes it unique to encourage click throughs and downloads.

4 New Categories

The App Store will have a different look and feel for both users and developers. As part of its overhaul, the new iOS 11 App Store will have three categories; today, apps and games. Apps and games will showcase highly rated and featured picks, while the today tab will be more editorial in focus with articles, interviews and tips. To put your submission in contention for this part of the store, focus on creating a very strong pitch. You need a compelling story and a strong app.
