5 app design best practises to consider

Patrice Appleton • Sep 22, 2021

The design tips you should follow to keep users interested in your app.

As the app market becomes more and more crowded, it’s important to make sure your app stands out from the crowd and is a success with users.

Alongside making sure your app design is aesthetic and eye-catching, there are also some best practices that you should be following to ensure the optimal user experience.

We’ve created a list of the 5 most important design principles to consider when designing your app, that will seriously impress any new users.

  1. Get rid of any clutter

There’s nothing worse than using an app that’s cluttered and disorganised. You want your users to easily navigate around your app, without bombarding them with irrelevant information or annoying pop-ups and graphics.

Get rid of anything in your design that isn’t crucial to the user journey, and focus on giving the user exactly what they need, when they need it. Doing this will increase retention and improve user satisfaction.

  1. Make navigation clear and simple

Users only have a certain amount of energy when it comes to figuring out how to use an app. If you make it too difficult to navigate, the user will simply abandon your app and find another one to use.

To encourage users to interact and engage with your app, make sure navigation is visible and available at all times. You should also avoid any dead ends, and always give the user the option to go back if they find themselves lost.

  1. Allow one-hand use

Most people now use their phone with only one hand, so make sure your app accommodates this.

You want to make sure that menus, pop-ups and other controls are positioned in an area that can comfortably be reached with one thumb.

Similarly, think about controls that a customer might accidentally tap while using your app. If this is a common problem, you should consider moving these controls to areas of the screen which are harder to reach.

  1. Always keep users within the app

Once you’ve got a user on your app, keep them there! Don’t link off to new browser windows that take them out of the app. This increases load and waiting times and can cause users to abandon your app.

If you do need to link to external pages, perhaps to pages on your website, think about ways you could incorporate them into the app itself instead.

  1. Personalise the experience

Personalisation is a great way to engage with users and create loyalty.

This could be as easy as using the customer’s name on the welcome screen and at other points in the user journey.

You could also find ways to push users towards specific content you think they’d be interested in. Not only does this show you understand your customer, but also prevents them from being distracted by irrelevant information.
