App trends to feature in your 2020 business app design

Patrice Appleton • December 31, 2019

The start of a brand new year is always a wonderful source of motivation – and a great time to set goals, objectives and targets for your business. The start of this year is especially meaningful as not only are we beginning a new year, we’re also entering a new decade.

If your plans for 2020 include finally getting an app developed for your business, we’re here to help. Read on for our rundown of some of the upcoming hottest trends of the year we expect to see emerging in Q1 – so you can resolve to incorporate them into your own app development project in the coming months…

Big and bold

You read it here first – we predict that 2020 will be big and bold. By that we mean the use of bolder fonts and brighter colours used as accents within the very best new app designs. Oversized fonts are very magazine-style but they can also work really well on smaller screens (ie smartphones). Splashes of bright colour too are also very powerful when used with restraint and when paired with a more neutral colour, they look very modern.

Animation

This is one trend we’ve been hearing whispers about for a while now so 2020 could be the year it goes more mainstream. Used appropriately, animation is a wonderful tool for engagement and can improve the user experience.

AR

Augmented Reality has been around for a while but as with any new technology, it has been the preserve of larger firms with very big budgets. Thankfully, AR is becoming more accessible and we think it won’t be too long until it’s mainstream, meaning it could feasibly become a very popular and on trend addition to business app design over the course of the next 12 months.

Virtual reality

In a similar vein to Augmented Reality, we think virtual reality and virtual experiences will weigh heavily on app designs over the coming 12 months. The applications are endless as just as with AR, VR can be used to increase engagement, elevate the user experience and help app users to really connect with your brand.

End-to-end designs

The design and technology powering smartphones is changing and, as devices evolve and change, so too will the apps designed for those phones. The steady appearance of larger screens with no borders and corner-to-corner displays is a case in point. This gives app designers more space to play with and greater opportunity to be creative. We expect to see very ingenious uses of this space appearing in 2020.
