What To Expect From The New Samsung S8

Eazi-Apps Support • Apr 08, 2017

Giving us a glimpse into the future of smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is here.

For many, the only worthy rival to Apple’s iPhone market dominance, Samsung’s phone releases are always exciting for the gadget obsessed. Lets see what Samsung has brought to the table this time around

Display

If there’s one thing smartphone owners can agree on about our phones, it’s our love for bigger, brighter, sharper screens. Samsung has understood this inherently and each new phone release from the tech giant has seen screen sizes pushed higher and higher. The S8’s are no exception.

The standard Galaxy S8 will possess gigantic 5.8 inch screen that on its own would promise visual thrills. But it’s the Plus that will really grab consumer attention.  With a resolution of 2960×1440 pixels, 4.2 megapixels have been crammed inside 6.2 inches of Super AMOLED glass and the whole screen wrapped around staggering 84% of the phones body. Samsung calls these ‘Infinity Displays’, a natural evolution of their existing ‘Edge’ model phones, and protects this powerful set up with Gorilla Glass 5.

For those who use their phones for mobile photography or a handy pocket sized cinema, the screens alone will be all the temptation they need to pick up the Galaxy S8 or the larger Plus model.

Camera

Even casual smartphone users are just as concerned with the quality of their devices camera as they are with its phone functions. Samsung improved their front facing camera, taking it up from 5 to 8 mega pixels- great news for the selfie-loving crowd. But the tech giant has raised a few doubts by carrying over the same main camera module they used in last year’s S7 models.

In Samsung’s defence, the S7 camera is only a year old and was viewed by many reviewers as 2016’s best.

As such, Samsung has focused instead on enhanced image processing. One snap of the shutter takes 3 photos which the S8 automatically combines into a single final image. In theory, this will create far superior final pictures without having to change the hardware. But both Apple and Google will release new phone models this year and if they have upgraded their cameras significantly, Samsung’s confidence in their hardware might prove a misstep.

Performance and Battery Life

Samsung has played things pretty safe with their new release, valuing day to day experience over wild innovation. CPU performance has a perfectly serviceable 10% boost while GPU has gained 21% from the S7 models.

Both phones will be as quick and smooth to operate as consumers have come to expect from their leading brands. But between the S6 and S7 last year, the CPU and GPU speeds improved by 30% and 60% respectively, so don’t expect to be dazzled by the change.

It’s far more understandable that Samsung have been careful with their battery improvements, such as they are; After the exploding Note debacle, every phone and tablet maker should be examining battery function going forwards. The S8 battery capacity remains the same as the S7, which raises questions of how they’ll fare with the larger, brighter new screens. But the new batteries overall shelf life will be far longer than any before, retaining 95% of their charge capacity after a year of use. This a huge improvement on the 20% drop of capacity seen in the S7 battery after the same period of time.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are not ground-breaking new phones, but they can’t all be game changers. There are no major tech revolutions looming on the horizon for Samsung to integrate so they’ve focused on small but key changes that enhance user experience.

A beautiful screen, focus on battery life and tweaking performance just enough to matter ensures that Samsung will stay at the top of the smartphone game for the foreseeable future. But if Apple or Google bring their A game to their upcoming releases, Samsung may regret playing it safe over bold with the S8 and S8 Plus.

The Samsung S8 and S8 Plus are available from the 21 st of April.
