Google says apps are perfect for the ‘new normal’

In the wake of the global pandemic, it should come as no surprise to hear that screen time has increased for most of us. Research conducted by the analytics firm, App Annie confirms this is certainly the case for smartphone users, with the average person now spending more than three hours each day on apps. This is great news if you’re in the process of getting an app designed for your business.

Google says apps are vital to many modern businesses and provide an important means of delighting customers, noting “We know that apps allow businesses to deliver smoother, faster and more personalised user experiences. In this unprecedented year, apps have also become a crucial platform that brands can use to pivot quickly and respond to changing market dynamics.”

Here’s exactly why apps are thriving right now – and why there’s never been a better time to jump in with your own app.

1. They can quickly fill service gaps

With many physical locations forced to close their doors, digital experiences and services have been a lifeline for brands and consumers alike over the last 12 months. A mobile app is an agile tool which can quickly be deployed to fill gaps left by store closures.

Your app could allow customers to easily place orders for click and collect for example, where in-store shopping is no longer available. It can be used to reserve deliveries, for those unable or unwilling to opt for click and collect, provide a means of interacting with customer service reps to source product information or used to manage an account digitally rather than face-to-face.

2. They can be used to meet customer needs

Whether it’s a desire to go paperless or to avoid standing in queues, a business app can be used to exactly meet customer needs, as and when their behaviours and requirements change. We have seen this happen many times through the course of the pandemic, with the growth in time spent on apps reflective of how well received this agility is.

3. They offer a safe environment for customers

Even when the world returns to normal, research suggests that not all consumers feel comfortable with the thought of shopping in bricks and mortar stores or returning to face-to-face contact. An app is an ideal tool for creating a safe digital environment to connect with and communicate with consumers. This could be as simple as including a video chat or text chat function, allowing your customer service reps to interact with customers in a way that suits their needs and preferences.
