Social Media Marketing Mistakes to Avoid When Promoting Your New Business App

Patrice Appleton • December 3, 2019

Social media platforms are rich with opportunity for you to communicate with your audience, sell your product and ultimately get your new business app discovered. These platforms are designed with various multi-media options to give you a place to really engage with your customers and potential app users afterall.

Social media isn’t as easy as it may seem though and it is an area where so many brands go horribly wrong. It’s not uncommon to see social media being entirely misused or misunderstood. This can result in a depreciation in your brand trust and authority as well as failing to inspire advocacy. Worse still, it could undermine all of the effort you’ve put into having your new business app developed.

Modern day consumers are allergic to clutter and social media is full of clutter. As such, many users are now more selective about who and what they follow on social media. When they see posts or communications they don’t like, they are more likely than ever to unfollow or unsubscribe to keep the amount of clutter in their digital lives to a minimum.

So, to help you avoid social media failure here are some seemingly obvious but apparently not obvious enough, tips:

Don’t Post for the Sake of It

Yes, you’ll hear many marketers and advertisers say that you need to be active on social media, and they’re right, mostly. Yes, it’s good to be active and to stay in front of your audience but you need to have worthwhile content to post too. If you don’t have anything meaningful to say, sometimes it’s best not to say it at all.

Some of the biggest blunders and turn offs come from brands who end up just posting trash because they think they have to blitz the social platforms with a constant stream of updates day in and day out. This just doesn’t work. Ultimately if you’re struggling to find content to post about, it’s likely your brand’s content strategy needs looking at so that you keep up with the needs of your audience.

Don’t Be Too Rigid

If we’re not guilty of it ourselves we all know a brand who adheres to rigid social media posting and scheduling. For example, Instagram posts with the same imagery and colour scheme, perhaps even a template in which every third post is a copy and pasted motivational quote harvested from Wikipedia. Or the obligatory product image post one after the other in the same fashion.

Being too rigid is boring and off putting. Once your audience becomes used to something like this, they ultimately become blind to it, they don’t stop to really look or listen anymore. Avoid being too predictable or samey. Think outside the box for new ways to get your audience excited.

Promoting Instead of Engaging

You could have the absolute best products in your given field – and you will of course want to shout about your new app - but no matter how good, your audience is going to get really sick of being sold too post after post.

Think of social media as a place to engage, talk to and even learn about your audience and what they want instead of just spoon feeding them product image and features one after the other. It’s rigid, it’s dull and it ultimately doesn’t engage them. Share educational tips, run competitions, or even just simply talk to your audience and ask them to engage with you. Show some empathy and understanding and your social media marketing will soar!
