We’ve witnessed several groundbreaking apps as they’ve debuted on the app stores, brilliant marketing campaigns and some seriously impressive tech. This year’s numbers have also been bigger and better than ever too with some world firsts reached.
So, read on for our stats summary to really put some context into a bumper year…
1. 6 million Android apps
Way back in January when 2019 got underway, Android users had access to a pool of 2.6 million Android apps. There were also 2.2 million iOS apps in the App Store available for download.
2. WhatsApp has 191 million new users in Q2
In 2018, WhatsApp was crowned the world’s most downloaded app – it was downloaded over 900 million times through the year. Fast forward to Q2 2019, and it’s still topping the charts. Between April-June, it racked up 181 million downloads from first time users across iOS and Android, making it the number one app for new downloads.
3. YouTube records 28.5 million iOS installs
While WhatsApp was the top app by overall downloads, YouTube was the most popular iOS app in Q2, with 28.5 million installs.
4. TikTok hits one billion
We’re willing to bet that this time last year, you probably wouldn’t have heard of TikTok. Today, it’s a viral sensation. In February, the video app hit an milestone one billion downloads.
5. 90% of mobile screen time spent on apps
Various studies have been conducted to find out just how addicted to our smartphones we all are. Some research suggests that the average smartphone owner will check their phone around once per 12 minutes – or five times per hour typically. That’s a lot of screen time. In fact, it’s said that 90% of all time spent on our phones goes to app use. Of course, that can cover a range of activities, from surfing the net, to messaging to watching video. It seems we just aren’t using our phones to make many calls!
