The most inspiring design trends to help your app stand out from the crowd

Apps are one of the best marketing tools that new small business owners can use to generate more customers, as shown in a recent survey where 53% of smartphone users said that they make purchases using company-specific apps.

But not all apps are successful, one of the things that sets a great app apart from an average one is the design.

We’ve gathered a list of some of our favourite design trends that have been extremely popular in 2021. These trends will hopefully give you some inspiration when it comes to deciding how you want your app to look.

Minimalist design that’s easy on the eyes

We all spend so much time during the day focussing on our screens that it can sometimes feel like we’re being bombarded with loud colours, bright screens and too much information.

In response to this, we’ve seen a lot of businesses go down the minimalist route that uses less colour, paired-down design and makes good use of ‘dark mode’ features to make their apps a much more soothing and enjoyable experience for users.

Creative use of data

There aren’t many app users that want to see lots of data and numbers, so some app creators have got creative and found new and interesting ways to display data that they think their customers should know.

A great example of this trend can be seen in some of the newer banking apps, like Starling and Monzo. Both of these businesses have found fun and unique ways to display their customer’s banking information in a way that holds people’s attention.

90s Inspired

Trends always find their way back into the mainstream, and at the moment there’s been a resurgence of 90’s trends—especially with apps. We’ve seen lots of new apps that replicate things like 90s games or 90s disposable cameras, or just apps that choose a more retro-style design to entice customers.

It may seem counter-intuitive to design an app that has a low-tech 90s style, but it could be the secret to having an aesthetic app that users love. Remember that the technology behind your app doesn’t have to be low-tech, just the design of it!

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Virtual and augmented reality combines the real world with virtual elements and has been able to create unique and engaging user experiences. Popular apps that use these elements already, and have seen massive success, include Pokemon Go and the Google Maps Street View.

Virtual and Augmented Reality can have a wide range of uses, from enhancing mobile gaming experiences to helping small businesses generate sales. For example, a paint company that uses augmented reality technology to show customers what different colours of paint could look like in their home.
