5 ways your new mobile app can exceed user expectations

Easy ways to exceed user expectations for better app retention

When it comes to mobile apps, users have very high expectations and plenty of choice. If your app doesn’t meet these expectations, they will simply abandon the app and download another that better fits their needs.

In fact, 21% of mobile app users abandon an app after only one use. This makes it important for app developers to meet user needs—and quickly.

Here are five ways you can easily improve your new mobile app to exceed user expectations:

1. Smooth and logical user experience

Mobile apps should not be confusing or difficult to navigate, so you should always make the user experience, and flow of user journeys, as smooth and logical as possible.

To exceed expectations you should remove any unnecessary steps that waste the user’s time or energy. Also ensure users are able to quickly get to a ‘touchpoint’—whether that’s a sign-up page, product page or checkout to avoid unnecessary frustrations.

2. Collect customer feedback often

Users want to have their say, and as an app owner, you should make sure to listen so you can improve and revise your product.

To exceed expectations, make it easy for your users to provide feedback. Whether this is a feedback form when they complete a purchase, or a simple happy face/sad face pop-up within their journey through your app interface.

Make sure these pop-ups and forms are easy to minimise or skip, so you don’t discourage users who don’t want to provide feedback.

3. Personalised experience

An easy way to make a customer feel more loyal and connected to your app is to make it personalised. You can do this by simply asking for their name after they download the app and using it each time they load up your small business app.

You can also do this by providing various options for a user to get in touch with you—such as through social media, email, live chat - to easily get a personalised response if they need it.

4. Understand user trends

It’s easy to conduct market research and understand what the current needs of your customers are, but to exceed these expectations you could research market trends to understand the future of your customer’s needs, too.

This way you can start to meet the expectations before the customer even knows that they have them.

You can identify trends by using platforms like Google Trends , or through companies like Mintel that produce in-depth global consumer trend reports yearly.

5. Don’t stop at the sale

With new apps, a lot of the focus will be on the initial journey that gets a user to a sale. But, it’s important to consider the journey the user may take after they’ve completed this.

To exceed expectations, you could link them back to another part of the app they may find interesting, offer them the chance to give feedback, or provide excellent after-sales support.
